Griffin Mayor To Sign "Benefits Day" Proclamation

On Wednesday, November 18, 2009, Georgia Commissioner of Veterans Service Pete Wheeler, leaders of the local veterans organizations and auxiliaries, and representatives of participating agencies will meet with Griffin Mayor Dick Morrow for the signing of a proclamation designating December 10, 2009, as "Supermarket of Veterans Benefits Day" in Griffin. The ceremony will take place in the Courtroom at City Hall on South Hill Street at 11 a.m.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has notified the Georgia Department of Veterans Service that "Patient Care Group" representatives are contacting veterans under the pretense of helping them to obtain their VA prescriptions because the pharmacy billing procedures have changed.

SDVS Represented At Senate Hearing

Following is the full text of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service's Statement presented by Mr. Tom Cook, Assistant Commissioner for Field Operations and Claims, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs Field Hearing on Veterans' Perceptions of Community Based Outpatient Clinics. DoD Announces Transferability Options For Post 9/11 GI Bill

The Defense Department has announced its policy for transferring educational benefits to the spouses and children of service members under the "Post 9/11 GI Bill," which takes effect Aug. 1, 2009.

New Post 9/11 GI Bill goes into effect May 1

VA starts accepting applications for the Post 9/11 GI Bill on May 1, 2009. Individuals with active duty service since September 11, 2001, may be eligible for this benefit and can apply online at www.gibill.va.gov. The program provides tuition and fees, a housing allowance, a books and supplies stipend, and the option to transfer these benefits to family members under certain circumstances. By law, the new benefit is effective August 1, 2009. For more information, visit the GI Bill website or call 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551). Veterans may also contact the Georgia Department of Veterans Service, Education Division, at 404-656-2306. Veterans who qualify under previous GI Bill provisions are especially encouraged to find out how the new options could affect them.

VA Designs Medallion for Private Graves

The Department of Veterans Affairs is in the preliminary stages of designing a medallion (IAW Public Law 110-57, December 2007) to be affixed to an existing privately-purchased headstone or marker to signify the deceased's status as a veteran. VA estimates the new medallion will be available in summer 2009.

Dobbins Clears Major Hurdle for Military Commissary

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and U.S. Representative Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., recently announced that Dobbins Air Reserve Base has cleared a major hurdle in its quest to build a military commissary on the base. Isakson and Gingrey have been working for more than a year to try to ensure a seamless transition between the closure of existing commissaries serving metro Atlanta and construction of the new commissary.

VA "Aid and Attendance" Payments: An Under-Used Benefit

There is an under-used, special monthly pension benefit available to Georgia's wartime veterans and surviving spouses of deceased wartime veterans incapable of self support and in need of regular personal assistance.

VA Spends Over $2.6 Billion in Georgia During 2008

According to fiscal year figures recently obtained from the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Georgia veterans who qualified under federal law benefited in over $2.67 billion that the VA spent in Georgia during 2008.

Most Georgia Veterans Eligible for Free Driver's License

Georgia veterans, who served on active duty or active duty in a reserve component, including the National Guard, during wartime or any conflict when personnel were committed by the President, are probably eligible to receive a free Georgia driver's license.
