The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery -- Glennville is situated on the 42.6 acre site of the former Dyess Farm just north of the town center of Glennville in Tattnall County, Georgia. It is located along US Highway 301, about 25 miles west of the main post of Fort Stewart.

Mr. Wayne Durrence of Glennville was the immediate past owner of the farm who sold it to the Glennville Industrial Development Authority. Through enabling legislation approved by the State of Georgia the Georgia Department of Veterans Service acquired the property from the development authority in 2003, where- upon the department initiated planning and design efforts for the Phase-1 build-out of the cemetery in conjunction with the State Cemetery Grant Service of the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The initial construction is projected to handle veteran and veteran family member interments through 2017.

The construction of the initial phase of the cemetery of approximately 26 acres contains a preplaced in-ground interment area, main entrance, roads, walkways and landscaping, an administration building/visitors center, enclosed committal shelter (chapel), columbarium where ashes will be interred, carillon and the maintenance complex. In addition the cemetery will provide a traditional in-ground interment area for individual veteran interments, an in-ground burial location for ashes, an ashes’ spreading area and a section for memorial markers for veterans whose remains are not available for burial in a National Cemetery System facility.

Another key feature of the cemetery is the co-location of the Glennville Veterans Service Office in the Administration Building, located just inside the main entrance. This office assists veterans and their families with applications for veterans benefits and veterans claims. It was previously located in downtown Glennville at the City Hall Annex. By combining the two department functions at the same location, the Department will provide better service to veterans and their families in the Bryan, Liberty, Long, Tattnall and Wayne county area.

The overall cost of the project is $6,857,900. The VA provided a grant in the amount of $6,432,900 to fund all of the VA approved items for the cemetery. The remaining $425,000 was funded by the State of Georgia to cover costs to enclose the committal shelter and provide year-round climate control for the structure, provide additional square footage for the committal shelter, provide additional square footage in the administration building to house the Glennville Veterans Service Office and to cover anticipated additional equipment item costs for the cemetery above the amount covered by the VA grant.

Completion of this state veterans cemetery will provide three fully operational veterans cemeteries for veterans and their families in Georgia with many years of usage ahead. The Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia opened in 2006. The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville, Georgia opened in 2001 and the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery -- Glennville opening in 2007 completes the triad.

This new state veterans cemetery will be a first–class memorial to the many Georgia veterans who served their nation in times of war and peace. We intend this cemetery to be a most fitting tribute to the veterans of Georgia and to their sacrifice and service to our nation.

State veterans cemeteries are part of the National Cemetery System. The requirements for burial are the same for all National Cemetery System cemeteries in Georgia.
