Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Milledgeville is located approximately 5 miles south of downtown Milledgeville along Georgia Highway 112. This cemetery, established on 142 acres the Department received from the Georgia Forestry Commission, includes an administration/visitor center with a state of the art information booth, a committal chapel, a carillon, and 12 columbarium shelters for cremations. Cemetery grounds also include a six-acre lake and a three-acre, multi-tier walled ceremonial area available for use by veterans’ organizations on remembrance days, such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Presently occupying 30 of the 142 acres, the cemetery will eventually be the final resting place for more than 100,000 eligible veterans, their spouses and eligible dependents.

There were 167 burials in 2008, making the total-to-date 1,117 veterans, spouses, and dependents buried at the GVMC. The burials are composed of 777 casketed burials, 189 cremations in the columbarium, 136 in-ground cremations, and 15 memorial markers.

The avenue of flags is displayed when ceremonies are held at the cemetery, such as National Arbor Day, Memorial Day and for Wreaths Across America. In addition, it is displayed on Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.

On April 25, 2008, the cemetery hosted its seventh annual Arbor Day Ceremony, co-hosted by the Georgia Forestry Commission. Robert Farris of the Georgia Forestry Commission and Brigadier General Lawrence Dudney, Commander of the 78th Troop Command of the Georgia Army National Guard, dedicated a tree in memory of Georgia’s veterans. Dogwood and Redbud seedlings were given out to the approximately 150 people who attended.

On May 26, 2008, flags were placed on all burial sites and at the Front Entrance of the cemetery in recognition of Memorial Day. The Knights of Columbus conducted a ceremony attended by approximately 50 people.

On November 11, 2008, Georgia Military College Preparatory School students assisted in placing flags at the Front Entrance and on each graveside in recognition of Veterans Day. The Union Recorder, the Milledgeville daily newspaper, published a front-page article about the students and the cemetery.

On December 13, 2008, the cemetery hosted its third annual Wreaths Across America ceremony honoring our past and present military. Seven wreaths were presented honoring each branch of our Armed Forces, Merchant Marines and POW/MIA’s. The ceremony included members of the Patriot Guard Riders, an Honor Detail from Fort Gordon, and members of the Baldwin County Navy JROTC program. Approximately 100 people attended the ceremony. The Worcester Wreath Company provided the seven wreaths for the ceremony. The cemetery later received another 60 wreaths from Worcester, which were placed on graves at the cemetery. Both The Union Recorder and the Baldwin Bulletin published front-page articles about the ceremony.

Cemetery staff members remain active in the local community by meeting frequently with business groups, veterans’ organizations, and church groups. The cemetery staff also provided an information display at the Department’s annual Supermarket of Benefits held in Columbus, Georgia this year.

The GVMC’s hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., excluding official state holidays. The cemetery is open to families, visitors and the general public seven days each week from 8:00 A.M. to dusk.
