Expanded GI Bill Benefits Approved for Post-9/11 Veterans

President George W. Bush has signed into law "The Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2008," a new education benefit program (Chapter 33) that will expand the benefits available to certain service members and veterans with active duty military service on or after September 11, 2001.

When is the bill effective?

The new benefits are payable as of August 1, 2009, towards training completed after July 31, 2009.

How many months of assistance are available?

Generally the entitlement is 36 months.

How much money is available?

Eligible individuals will receive a percentage, as determined by length of credible active duty service, of tuition and fees not to exceed the most expensive in-state public institution of higher education.

What living expenses are paid?

An average $1,000/month stipend based on local BAH for E-5 with dependents.

Is there money available for books?

Up to $1,000/month.

Are benefits transferable to immediate family?

Yes, only while still on active duty.

How much time is there to use these benefits?

Up to 15 years after separation.

Is there an enrollment fee?

No.
